ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (February 22, 2024) National Dance Institute of New Mexico (NDI New Mexico) today announced its popular annual live performance, Moving Stories, at The Hiland Theater in Albuquerque. This year’s Moving Stories, created by Hiland Theater Artistic Director Layla Amis, is Dreaming into Being, a collaboration between Amis, the Hiland Company dancers and Urban Verbs, an Albuquerque-based arts, performance, and community outreach collective founded by Hakim Bellamy, Colin Diles, and Carlos Contreras.
The choreography and music for Dreaming into Being was created through a process exploring poetry, music and sound editing, art, and dance as an expression of people’s interior and exterior realities. These various art forms influenced a performance that explores the idea that self-expression and self-exploration, combined with compassion and respect for others, can transform
aspirations into reality.
“We are thrilled to present this unique performance to the Albuquerque community,” Amis said. “The wholly unique creative contribution of Urban Verbs, combined with the talent of our most advanced and dedicated student dancers, will result in a deeply felt and insightful performance that celebrates the potential we all hold within us.”
“That our students are able to present this eclectic and sophisticated performance is reflective of NDI New Mexico’s focus on helping young people gain confidence through hard work, resilience and doing their best,” said NDI New Mexico Artistic Director Liz Salganek. “We think
the Albuquerque community will be moved by the choreography and music and by the skill and artistry exhibited by our students.”
“Moving Stories is an excellent example of NDI New Mexico’s commitment over the past 30 years to help New Mexico youth realize their potential through the arts,” said NDI New Mexico Executive Director Russell Baker. “This ambitious performance showcases not only the immense talent in our community, but also the city’s dynamic arts culture. As NDI New Mexico celebrates this important anniversary, we look forward to many more decades of helping youth fulfill their potential.”
Performances are March 1 and 2 at 7 p.m. at The Hiland Theater in Albuquerque. Tickets for performances are available at hilandtheater.com/tickets. Seating is limited. Tickets are “Pay What You Can” with a suggested price of $25 and a minimum ticket price of just $5, to ensure
affordability to the entire Albuquerque community.
NDI New Mexico’s annual Moving Stories performance provides the organization’s advanced students with opportunities to participate in high-level, curated productions, which appropriately challenge them to expand their technical artistry and performance capabilities. These experiences often lead students to develop a passion for performing and interest in participating in more NDI New Mexico classes, as well as summer programs around the country and performing arts high school experiences.
