About the Performance
“Las Chilitas”, an original ballet by Rodney Rivera, and mixed repertoire by Melissa Briggs, Alex Langley, and Zak Ryan Schlegel
When the Bakers take over Café García, they strip it of its soul with sterile rules and a ruthless manager, Mr. Krancus. Their niece, Claire—a skilled but disconnected chef—knows cuisine, not culture. The first to resist are Las Chilitas, the Red and Green chiles, proud spirits of New Mexico’s soil. Cast out as “ugly,” they lead the exiled ingredients under the guidance of Doña Maíz Azul, the ancient Blue Corn. Through ritual and memory, they awaken their power as flavor, history, and identity.
Their rebellion seeps back into the kitchen, touching Chef Juanita García and even Claire, whose refined cooking begins to honor the land. When Las Chilitas return, they reclaim the stove with dishes rich in spirit and truth, breaking Krancus’s cold control. In the end, the humble chiles restore Santa Fe’s heart—proving that real flavor is revolution.

About the Performance
In a world where imagination is fading, a young boy named Bastian discovers a mysterious book that draws him into the magical realm of Fantasia—a land threatened by a consuming force known only as The Nothing. As Bastian reads, he becomes entwined with the journey of Atreyu, a brave warrior tasked with saving Fantasia and its Childlike Empress.
Through a series of evocative dance sequences, the concert explores themes of courage, grief, wonder, and transformation. Atreyu’s encounters with mythical beings—Morla the Ancient One, the luckdragon Falkor, and the terrifying Gmork—are brought to life through dynamic choreography and shifting visual landscapes. Each movement piece reflects the emotional stakes of the story: the loss of Artax in the Swamps of Sadness, the trials of the Southern Oracle, and the revelation that Fantasia can only be saved by a human child’s belief.
Also featuring mixed repertoire by Ellia Asha Di Ninigrat and Malinda LaVelle.
